attending Clinics, Casualty and Day Hospitals.

to take medicines to get the most benefits. Pharmacists can advise when,
how much and how often, and whether it should be regularly or as needed,
for a short course or long term. We may ask you what you know about your
medicines to see if we can help you with further information.

| A | Assisting
patients to take their medication correctly by providing medication charts
or tablets set out in memory aid containers.
|
| R | Re-stocking
wards and departments. Pharmacists check prescription charts on the wards
to ensure medicines are used effectively. Technicians ensure that medicines
are available on the wards for patients.

| M | Medicines
information. We distribute up to date information about medicines, and answer
questions from Doctors and Nurses. We help to write policies relating to
looking after medicines in the hospital and we arrange talks and training
for Nurses. We have links with other colleagues and specialists and can
also obtain information from manufacturers.

| A | Advising
about side effects of medicines. Ensuring doses are appropriate, and checking
for interactions between medicines.

| C | Computerised
labelling, ward stock lists and issues to wards, as well as ordering and
invoicing. We have twice daily deliveries from wholesalers and also order
medicines directly from manufacturers and other hospitals.

| S | Staff
qualifications
Pharmacist - 4 year degree in Pharmacy + 1 year pre-registration
training to become a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great
Britain. Pharmacists are required to continually update their skills and
knowledge and some gain further qualifications. Pharmacists provide the
clinical services, are responsible for the department and check all dispensed
items.
Technician - 2 year block release NVQ level 3 training while working.
Technicians dispense prescriptions, supply wards and organise routine work
in the pharmacy.
Assistants - on the job training. Assistants deal with the day to
day ordering and receiving of goods and assist Pharmacists and Technicians.
Clerical assistants help with all the paperwork and typing.

reports of medicine usage and analysing how much each ward and department
has spent on medicines.

| H | Hospitals
