A modular-based foundation management
development programme designed for staff from any discipline
whose role has specific responsibility for the management of
staff and resources. The programme is designed to develop
management skills and increase competence in performance to
meet the needs of the organisation. The programme
is designed specifically to provide a sound understanding of
the principles and practices of management, developing the
skills, confidence and knowledge of participants. The key
components of the programme are as follows:
- Attendance of a series of one- and two-day modules
- Completion of four work related assignments, to be
presented in a word-processed report format
- End of programme oral presentation (15 minutes
duration) of a chosen assignment
Stepping Stones has been accredited by the Institute of
Leadership and Management, Britain’s second largest
professional association for managers. Successful
completion of the programme will lead to Associate
Membership of the Institute of Leadership and Management.
The course fee of £585 should be met by the employing
Trust. The registration fee of £65* will be met by the
participant. * Fee at time of going to print
Introductory Module: Where Do I Fit in? Day One
of this module allows the opportunity for participants to
share information regarding job roles and
responsibilities, to consider the concept of learning
theory; explore the structure of the organisation and
identify a framework for presenting reports.
Introductory Module: Team Up To Win Day Two
explores a variety of leadership styles, examines skills
in relation to effective team building, and managing
motivation. Module 2: Creating Quality
This one-day module will consider how we strive for
quality by examining customer requirements, value for
money/standard setting and empowerment of staff.
Module 3: Challenge Of Change This one-day module
examines the principles of managing change, how to
implement change, understanding the consequences of change
and evaluating the change process. Module 4:
Getting Organised This one-day module encourages
participants to identify major difficulties of time
management, set personal and work priorities, and develop
ways of managing time more effectively. This module also
explores procedures and legal requirements of the
manager’s role in respect of Health & Safety.
Module 5: Getting The Message Across Day One of
this module examines aggressive, submissive and assertive
behaviour, and identifies how to minimise and deal with
resistance to assertive communications. Day Two explores
factors which affect the negotiation process and skills in
relation to handling and participating in meetings.
Module 6: Introduction to Recruitment and Selection
A comprehensive two-day programme looking at all stages of
the recruitment and selection process, the legal
background, standards and equal opportunities policy. The
programme is participative and designed to help you
develop the necessary knowledge and skills to undertake
all the various stages of the process effectively. It also
provides an opportunity to practice interview skills in a
safe environment. Module 7: Perfecting
Presentations Day One of this module examines the
planning and structuring components as well as skills
required to deliver an effective presentation.
Participants will explore and practice a variety of
presentation techniques on Day One of the module and have
time to prepare a mini-presentation to be given on Day
Two. Day Two will allow each participant to make a
presentation which will be video recorded to allow for
individual observation and general feedback.
Modules 8 and 9: Managing People Problems This
two-day module explores decision making and problem
solving through working with case studies based on real
situations within the framework of Trust Personnel
Policies and Procedures. Participants have the opportunity
to develop skills in managing ‘people problems’ in a safe
environment. Module 10: Appraisal Review
Process and Implementation This one-day module
explores the appraisal review system. The skills required
to implement appraisal effectively will be examined and
practised. Participants will be encouraged to develop an
understanding of the need for clear standards of
performance and objectives. Module 11:
Fitting In The Finance This one-day module is an
introduction to financial management and aims to develop
participant's understanding and analysis of financial
information, for the purpose of decision making.
Presentation/ Review Module: The Next Step The
morning of this module allows individuals to give a 15
minute oral presentation of one of their chosen
assignments to fellow participants. The afternoon session
will enable participants to evaluate learning, reflect
upon the programme itself, and consider options for future
development. The modules have been designed
specifically to reflect the module title, therefore, staff
who do not require the full programme may attend those
modules that are appropriate to their role.
