Approved Social Worker Training
This 20 week, full-time programme reflects the aims,
purposes and staffing needs of the Social Services
Departments who are members of the South West of England
Approved Social Work Training Consortium as well as the
consortium's views on social work education and training.
The programme's learning outcomes aim set out below is
consistent with CCETSW Paper 19:19 and Paper 31. Specific
programme objectives are set out in the learning goals for
subject areas, placements and in the assessment criteria.
The overall aim of the programme is to provide high quality
training in mental health social work as well as a positive
and rewarding educational experience, and to: develop
students' intellectual and creative responses; their
understanding and judgement; their problem-solving skills,
their ability to communicate; their ability to see
relationships within what they have learned; and to perceive
mental health social work studies within a broader
perspective. On completion of the first part of

Post-Qualifying Award) students should be able to
demonstrate:

accountable professional activity and to respect and value
their own contribution to the process
- An ability to integrate knowledge, skills and values
in their practice
- An ability to reflect on and to evaluate their work
- A capacity to take responsibility for continuing

tackle dilemmas where there is conflict between
professional judgement and agency policy
- An understanding of the roles of other disciplines and
a capacity to work with them
- An efficiency in the selection, use and evaluation of
a range of resources
- An understanding of the legal and organisational
